Album Reviews: Charity Quin

Journeys of the Heart, 1999

Charity Quin's "Journeys of the Heart" could be characterized as primarily a jazz/adult contemporary album, interspersed with folk and Celtic influences. One song in particular, "Antiphon", reflects her Irish roots. Fans of Iona will also appreciate the contributions of David Fitzgerald, whose winds can be heard throughout the recording's six tracks.

Charity, a classically trained piano and guitar player, is a regular Greenbelt Festival performer who has provided a somewhat eclectic mix of songs in this short collection of her work. "I'll Take My Place" is a favorite on this CD, which, accompanied by Fitzgerald's flute, provides a message of immeasurable comfort:

I'll take my place in your heart
turn you 'round to look into my eyes
and when you fall I'll bear you up
and cover you and shield you from all harm

and no matter how the storm winds blow
I'll never leave you
and no matter if your heart grows cold
I'll love you, I'll love you

Samples of Charity Quin's "Journeys of the Heart", as well as her single "Beauty for Ashes", a song in response to 9/11, can be downloaded from her website.
