U2 on CelticChristianTunes.com Radio?
On more than one occasion, listeners have asked why I play U2's "Tomorrow" on CelticChristianTunes.com Radio. After all, isn't this the band led by the foul-mouthed Bono? (Yeah, in case you hadn't heard, he's got a bit of a potty mouth. Even the FCC thinks he should have his mouth washed out with soap.)
So what's a U2 song doing on a Christian radio station? Well it turns out that, while I think it would be incorrect to classify U2 as a "Christian" band, they do have a tiny handful of songs with clearly Christian lyrics. There's even been a book written on the subject. It's not a new topic.
Now, I'm not going to play U2 just because I heard they were Christians, but I selected one song, the 20 year old track "Tomorrow", not only because it has a smooth uillean pipe line (unlike pretty much everything else U2 has done), but also specifically because it has Christian content:
Won't you come back tomorrow?
Won't you be back tomorrow?
Will you be back tomorrow?
Can I sleep tonight?
Open up, open up, to the Lamb Of God
To the love of He
Who made the blind to see.
He's coming back
He's coming back
O believe Him.
I suppose the best way to describe U2's placement in the playlist is that they fall somewhere between those bands who are listed in artist links (U2 isn't), and those bands who make the more liberal radio cut.
By the way, I can't help but speculate: If U2's members are Christians, then why all the speculation? I submit that if a person is a Christian, they should be eager to share that. If a Christian celebrity values their own image more than Christ's, there's something seriously wrong. (That's why it was very refreshing, when doing some background research, when I stumbled upon this interview (click here, then the "Video" tab under the headline) , in which actor Stephen Baldwin (younger brother of the famously worldly Alec) makes no apology for his faith.
