There but for the grace of God go I
Just finished watching If I Should Fall From Grace - The Shane MacGowan Story. Shane MacGowan is the former lead singer of The Pogues, a (THE?) highly talented Irish punk band.
After borrowing a Pogues CD in college, I regretfully chose not to include them in my collection after reading the lyrics. Too bad, because musically it's a lot of fun to listen to. (Think the Electrics, but grittier, a little tighter, and with almost no spiritually redeeming qualities.)
Anyhow, this movie is a sad testament to where people are capable of going without Jesus, especially when The Bottle is in charge. I don't think there's a single bit of candid footage where MacGowan is sober. Based on how he is portrayed in the film, I have to wonder if he's had a dry moment since his headmaster kicked him out of school at age 12. In one shot (the one on the DVD cover; see below), he looks, acts, and sounds downright Gollum-like. From his bulging eyes to his hissy toothless laugh, the man has been reduced to... To what?
To what I could easily be, were it not for Christ.
